Also, I cringe every time I put hashtags in my posts. I hate them with a passion. It’s not a Mastodon thing, I hated them on Twitter, I hate them on Instagram, and I hate them here equally.

It would be great if I could tag my posts with labels (like blogs) so that they’re categorized, but don’t impede the reading experience. Also, hashtags must be so annoying for people with screen readers, no?

@matt @film_girl They aren’t so bad If you capitalize the first letters of all the words. But that’s just another thing to tell people to do along side of adding alt text to all their images. But if there is like a dozen or more hash tags all in a row, then it gets a big much.

@KyleBorah @matt @film_girl That isn’t the case if the tags are in the body of the post. Or so I have been told. Screen readers will still barf on them. They need to be at the end of the post.

@lolzac @matt @film_girl Why would the location matter. A screen reader can read a hashtag just as well at the beginning, middle or end of a post. Like I said, the most important part to making them readable and comprehendible with a screen reader, is to capitalize the first letter of each word, and to try and avoid putting a whole bunch right in a row.

@KyleBorah @lolzac @film_girl So this is a recording of what a person using VoiceOver hears when reading posts with hashtags in them. This is obviously a more extreme case than average, but I think it shows why it can be annoying. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but parsing this audio would be a lot easier without having to omit the many times “hashtag” is uttered.
